Overview

A SWOT analysis is only useful when every point is evidenced and the team ends with choices. This swot analysis template sets three competitors side by side, so strengths and weaknesses are compared rather than listed in isolation. It moves from a two-by-two of competitor positions to a comparison table and a set of implications that pair the top points into actions. Use it for a marketing plan, a strategy review or a team workshop.

The sample is for Hartwell Works, a network of four physical therapy clinics in the Midwest with $6.8M in annual revenue. Every name, figure and date is fictional, including the three rival clinics. Replace the evidence, the competitor facts and the actions with your own sources, and share the draft with two people who disagree with you before circulating it.

Useful for

  • A clinic manager comparing three local rivals before setting next year's marketing budget
  • A strategy team turning a competitor review into three priority actions with owners
  • A student filling in a structured SWOT for a case study on a small business

What's included

  • Competitor SWOTs: a two-by-two of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats

  • Comparison: a feature table of three rivals across seven factors

Questions

Are the company, people and figures fictional?

Yes. Hartwell Works, the three rival clinics, the people named, the revenue, the evidence figures and every date are fictional. Replace them with your own sourced facts before any team relies on the analysis.

How many points should each SWOT box have?

Four to six is a good range. Each point needs a number or a named source, because a point with no evidence cannot be ranked, and a box full of one-word labels stops the team from choosing.

Where do the actions come from?

Pair the strongest strengths and the most serious threats, and the weaknesses that block an opportunity. Give each resulting action one owner and a date, and drop any action the team will not fund this year.
