How to copy, edit and reuse templates.

Getting a template

Do I need an account?

No. You do not need an account here to copy or download a free template. Making a copy in Google Docs or Slides needs a Google account, because the copy goes into your own Drive.

How do I copy a template to Google Docs or Slides?

Open the template page and choose Make a copy. Google shows a confirmation screen, then saves a private copy in your Drive. Nobody else can see it unless you share it.

Can I use a template in Word or PowerPoint?

Most document and presentation templates include a Word or PowerPoint download. Look for the download button on the template page. Layouts can shift slightly between tools, so check the file after opening it.

Why do some templates have no file?

Some automation templates are written guides that you follow in your own account. The template page says what is included before you start.

Editing a template

Are the names and figures real?

No. The people, companies and figures are fictional samples. Replace them with your own before you share the document.

Can I change the colours and fonts?

Yes. Everything in your copy is editable. A template may use fonts that your tool has to load, and if a font is missing your tool will replace it with another one.

Do I keep the photos?

You can keep or replace them. Photos from free stock libraries are used under their own licence, which the terms of use explain.

Using templates in your work

Can I use a template for client or commercial work?

Yes. Free templates can be used for personal, business and commercial work, including work for clients, and you can share the documents you create with them.

Can I sell or republish a template?

No. You may not sell, give away or republish the templates themselves, edited or unedited. Link to the template page instead.

Are the legal, HR and finance templates professional advice?

No. They are starting points. Have anything that carries legal, financial or employment risk checked by a qualified person before you rely on it.

Still stuck?
