Overview

A continuity plan that has never been rehearsed is a set of hopes. A tabletop exercise tests whether people know who decides, what to restore first and how to reach each other when systems fail. This business continuity plan template runs one scenario in timed injects, so a team works through a disruption in order and leaves with actions. The debrief turns each gap into an owner and a date, which is the part auditors and insurers check first.

The sample is for Candlemas Logistics, a fictional freight firm whose Northgate hub is hit by ransomware. It walks the crisis team through a locked warehouse system, a backup that fails its test and a key supplier that cannot ship, with a four-hour restore target and a one-hour data loss limit for core systems. Replace the scenario, activities, roles and contacts with your own, and print the contact list for off-site storage before the drill.

Useful for

  • A crisis team running a 90-minute ransomware tabletop each spring
  • A continuity lead preparing evidence for an insurer's annual review
  • A site manager rehearsing the first hours of a power or IT outage

Questions

Are the company, people and scenario real?

No. Candlemas Logistics, its Northgate hub, staff, suppliers and the ransomware scenario are fictional. Replace them with your own sites, systems and contacts before you run the exercise.

Should we run the exercise on live systems?

No. A tabletop is discussion only. Nobody touches real systems, and a scribe records each decision with the time it was made. Test restores separately, on a copy of the data.

How often should we run this?

Run a tabletop at least twice a year, and after any real incident. Rotate the scenario so the team practises supplier loss, staff shortage and IT outage as well as ransomware.
