Business Continuity Plan

A small firm can lose its premises, its people, its systems or a key supplier in a single week, and the owner often has to decide everything at once. This template is a short continuity plan: it sets out the key risks, then one page each for premises, people, IT and suppliers, and ends with the contacts the crisis team needs. Each page states what to do first, so the plan can be read under pressure.
The sample is for Ironvale Works, a fictional joinery workshop, with named roles, recovery targets and a risk register that you can compare with your own business. Replace the critical activities, the crisis team and the phone numbers with real people, then rewrite the scenarios for disruptions you can actually imagine. Test the plan with a tabletop exercise before you rely on it.

Name the critical activities and the crisis team, using real people and personal phone numbers.
Replace the sample recovery targets with figures agreed with IT, and check them with a test restore.
Store a printed copy off-site, then run a tabletop exercise and record the actions.
Delete the guide page, then share the plan with the team or present it from Google Docs.
No. Ironvale Works, its staff, phone numbers, sites, suppliers and recovery figures are fictional sample data. Replace them with your own verified details before you rely on the plan.
At least twice a year, with a tabletop exercise that uses three scenario injects and takes about 90 minutes. Record every action with an owner and a date, and review the plan after each real incident.
Keep the same structure with one person in several roles, and name a deputy for each role who knows the phone tree. A short plan that people use is worth more than a long one that nobody reads.
