Overview

Strong candidates skip outcome-based job descriptions that read like a list of every possible skill. This template starts with what the person will achieve in their first year, then the day-to-day responsibilities, and only then the requirements, split into must-haves and nice-to-haves.

The structure also makes interviews easier: each outcome becomes a question to ask, and each must-have becomes something to assess.

Useful for

  • Hiring managers writing a new role from scratch
  • Rewriting an old job posting that attracts the wrong applicants
  • Agreeing a role's scope with HR before opening it

What's included

  • Role summary and team context
  • First-year outcomes
  • Responsibilities
  • Must-have and nice-to-have requirements
  • Working arrangements, compensation range and benefits
  • Hiring process and timeline

How to use it

  1. 1

    Download the Markdown outline.

  2. 2

Open it in Word (File → Open) or paste it into a new document; headings and lists carry over.

  3. 3

Write the first-year outcomes before anything else.

  4. 4

Keep must-have requirements to five or fewer.

  5. 5

Ask someone who does a similar job to read it before publishing.
