Overview

Early-stage job posts often list duties copied from another company and a long wish-list nobody meets. This template starts from the company stage and the reason for the hire, then sets out first-year outcomes with measures, a short list of essentials, pay, equity and a hiring process the candidate can follow.

The sample is a fictional first Care Operations Manager role at Lowmoor Care, a home-care startup, with a $64,000 to $74,000 band, a 0.4% option grant and a three-week process. Replace the role, outcomes, pay range, equity terms and dates with your own, and keep essentials to what is truly required.

Useful for

  • A founder hiring a first operations manager and needing candidates to see the stage and the stakes
  • A startup HR lead publishing the pay range, equity and process so strong applicants do not drop out
  • A hiring manager turning a vague wish-list into five or six outcomes with measures

What's included

  • Opening page with the role details, key figures and the reason for the hire
  • First-year outcomes scorecard with 90-day, 6-month and 12-month targets
  • Two-column page for essentials, nice-to-haves, benefits and adjustments
  • Equity page with round terms and ownership before and after the funding round
  • Hiring process in four steps with a second flow for candidates who need adjustments
  • Process detail table and a make-it-yours guide

How to use it

  1. 1

Click Make a copy in Google Docs, then confirm on the Google page. The copy is saved to your own Google Drive.

  2. 2

Replace the title, level, location, reporting line and pay range on the first page, and write why the role exists now.

  3. 3

Rewrite the outcomes as five to eight results the post-holder owns, with a measure and a date for each, and move anything not required to nice-to-haves.

  4. 4

Enter your real equity terms, benefits, application deadline and hiring steps, and add a line on adjustments for candidates.

  5. 5

Delete the guide page, then publish the description or share it with your hiring panel.

Questions

Should I include the salary range?

Yes. A visible range widens and improves your applicant pool, and some places require it by law. The sample uses a band of about 16% around the midpoint.

How many requirements should a startup list?

Keep to four to six essentials and three to five nice-to-haves. Long wish-lists screen out strong people who only apply when they match every line.

Are the company, people and figures real?

No. Lowmoor Care, every person, email address, funding figure and equity number in the sample are fictional. Replace them with your own before publishing.
