Overview

Internal APIs fail in the gaps: nobody knows who owns them, what latency to expect or when a call will be removed. This reference puts the owner, on-call contacts and service levels beside a quick start and a worked endpoint with request, parameters and the real response, so integrators get answers without opening a ticket.

The sample documents Junipera Labs' Entitlements API v2: a three-step quick start, a RACI for who approves breaking changes, a 99.9% availability target that the service beat at 99.95%, five dependency risks and a nine-month deprecation policy. Replace the host, auth scheme, endpoints, figures and contacts with your own.

Useful for

  • A platform team publishing the reference for a service that every product team calls
  • A new service owner documenting on-call contacts and service levels before launch
  • An engineering lead announcing a deprecation with a sunset date and a migration path

What's included

  • Cover page and a service summary with owner, base URL, version, key stats and a three-step quick start
  • Owners and on-call page with team cards and a RACI for breaking changes, pages and changelogs
  • Endpoint page with the operation, parameters table, example request and example response
  • Service levels scorecard with availability, p95 and p99 latency, error budget and definitions
  • Dependency heat map and risk register with owners and responses
  • Architecture and deprecation page, plus a make-it-yours guide

How to use it

  1. 1

Click Make a copy in Google Docs, then confirm on the Google page. The copy is saved to your own Google Drive.

  2. 2

Replace the base URL, version prefix and auth scheme on the service summary with your own, and name the team that owns the API.

  3. 3

Run each sample request against your sandbox and paste the real response, trimmed to the fields that matter. Use obviously fake keys in every example.

  4. 4

Rewrite the service levels, rate limits and error codes with the ones your API actually returns, and set the sunset date for your deprecation.

  5. 5

Delete the guide page, then share the document with consumer teams or present it.

Questions

What should an internal API reference include?

A base URL, authentication, a first request that works, endpoints with real responses, error codes, rate limits, versioning and a named owner with on-call contacts and service levels.

Why list owners and service levels with the endpoints?

Consumer teams need to know who to page and what latency and availability to plan for. Putting that next to the reference cuts support questions and sets expectations before launch.

Are the company, API, people and figures real?

No. Junipera Labs, the Entitlements API, all people and every figure are fictional sample data, and all keys and IDs are fake. Replace them with your own service's details.
