Overview

Lenders and investors back online stores only when the unit economics work after shipping, marketing and returns, and many plans hide those costs inside a single revenue line. This template is an e-commerce business plan built around the costs that decide survival: acquisition, conversion, fulfillment and returns, followed by a three-year profit and loss and a forecast against plan. Each section gives the number and the assumption behind it.

The sample describes Lowmoor Manufacturing, a fictional maker of workshop tools that sells online, with first-year revenue of $1.0M and profit turning positive in year two. Replace the products, the customer survey, the channel shares and the forecast with your own evidence, and check that closing cash stays above zero. Delete the chapters your reader does not need, so the plan stays short.

Questions

Are Lowmoor Manufacturing, its products and figures real?

No. Lowmoor Manufacturing, its founders, the customer survey, the channel data and every forecast figure are fictional sample data. Replace them with your own evidence before you approach a lender or investor.

Why does the plan show cash as well as profit?

Profit can be positive while cash runs out, because stock and marketing are paid before customers pay. Show monthly cash, and check the lowest month, so the funding ask covers the gap.

How should we treat returns in the numbers?

Show the return rate as a cost of sales or as a deduction from revenue, and state which one. Then test a higher rate, since returns are the quickest way for an online store's margin to disappear.
