Overview

Every Monday morning the workflow calls a backup status endpoint and reads the time of the last successful backup. If that time is more than 24 hours ago, the team is alerted in Slack and the owner receives an email.

When the backup is recent, the workflow writes a row to a Google Sheet with the check time and the backup time. That log is the proof you can show when someone asks whether backups are running.

Useful for

  • Catch a backup job that quietly stopped running
  • Keep a weekly log of backup checks for audits
  • Add a second check on top of your backup tool's own alerts

What's included

  • An n8n workflow with 7 nodes, ready to import
  • Trigger: Monday 8am
  • Connects HTTP, Slack, Gmail, Sheets
  • Sticky notes on the canvas that explain what to set up
  • No credentials inside: you connect your own accounts

How to use it

  1. 1

    Download the workflow JSON.

  2. 2

In n8n, create a workflow, open the … menu, choose Import from File and select the JSON.

  3. 3

Replace the status URL on Get backup status with your endpoint, and create the log sheet with the columns the sticky note lists.

  4. 4

Connect Slack, Gmail and Google Sheets on the nodes the sticky note names.

  5. 5

Run the workflow once to check both paths, then activate it.

What you need

Requirements

  • An n8n instance (cloud or self-hosted, version 1.x)
  • A backup status endpoint that returns the last backup time, plus a Slack workspace, Gmail and a Google sheet

Works with

  • n8n 1.x (cloud or self-hosted)

Questions

Is this n8n workflow free?

Yes. Download the JSON and import it into your own n8n. There is no sign-up and no cost.

Does it include any credentials?

No. The file has no keys, tokens or real endpoints. Add your own status URL and accounts after importing.

What if my backup tool has no status endpoint?

Write a small endpoint that returns the time of the last successful backup as JSON in a lastBackupAt field.
