Overview

Investors read a quarterly letter to learn three things quickly: how the fund performed, what went wrong and what you need from them. This template is a seven-page letter pack that answers in that order, with a formal cover letter, a performance scorecard, a holdings table, a calendar of dates, disclosures and a longer commentary.

The sample is a third-quarter 2026 letter from Umberfield Partners to the limited partners of an early-stage fund, with a net TVPI of 1.54x, one write-down stated plainly and a capital call announced with its due date. Replace the fund, figures and holdings, keep your metric definitions fixed from quarter to quarter, and write the bad news before the good.

Useful for

  • A fund manager writing the quarterly letter to limited partners with performance and holdings
  • A founder-led company reporting progress and cash to angels and shareholders each quarter
  • A property or growth fund announcing a capital call with key dates and disclosures

What's included

  • Formal letter with letterhead, references, subject line, body and signature block
  • Performance page with headline tiles and a full scorecard against target
  • Holdings page with cost, value and multiple for the largest positions
  • Key dates timeline with a December calendar for calls, meetings and reports
  • Numbered disclosures page covering scope, definitions, use of the letter and contacts
  • Two-column commentary on valuations and what to watch, plus a guide to making it yours

How to use it

  1. 1

Click Make a copy in Google Docs, then confirm on the Google page. The copy is saved to your own Google Drive.

  2. 2

Replace the letterhead, recipient, date and subject, then rewrite the opening paragraph with the single most important result of the quarter.

  3. 3

Overwrite the scorecard and holdings with your own figures, keeping each definition the same as last quarter, and recalculate any multiples.

  4. 4

Write the bad news paragraph before the good, and replace the asks with named introductions or actions and the dates they are needed by.

  5. 5

Delete the Make it yours guide page, then share the letter or send it as a PDF.

Questions

Should the bad news go in the letter?

Yes, and early. Investors who hear about a write-down or a missed milestone from you in the second paragraph trust the rest of the letter. Hearing it from a third party costs far more.

How often should I send it?

Send it every quarter on a fixed schedule, about two weeks after quarter end. Irregular timing makes investors wonder what is being held back, so the rhythm matters as much as the content.

Are the organisation and figures real?

No. Umberfield Partners, its people, email addresses, holdings and every figure are fictional sample content. Replace all of it with your own information before you send anything.
