Overview

When an engineer is alone at a customer's address, the policy has to answer three questions quickly: how often do they check in, who notices a missed check-in and what happens next. This template sets out the scope, the risk register, the check-in routine, the emergency escalation and the training that makes it work.

The sample follows Jasperfield Works, with 42 field engineers on a 60-minute check-in, a 10-minute escalation to the operations manager and a training day for each group of 12. Replace the scope, hazards, owners, contact details and dates with your own, and have a director sign and date the policy.

Useful for

  • A facilities or maintenance firm writing its first lone working policy for engineers on customer sites
  • An operations manager rewriting check-in and escalation rules after a missed check-in incident
  • A health and safety adviser preparing for an insurer or inspector who asks how lone workers are monitored

  • Scope page that compares what is and is not covered, with definitions and an exclusions callout

  • Check-in checklist for before, during and after each visit, with a missed check-in routine

Questions

Are the organisation and figures real?

No. Jasperfield Works, its people, contact details and every figure are fictional sample content. Replace them with your own before you issue the policy.

How often should a lone worker check in?

It depends on the risk. The sample uses every 60 minutes, and every 30 minutes at high-risk visits. Set the interval from your own risk assessment and review it each year.

Does this replace a risk assessment?

No. The register summarises the main hazards, but you still need a written assessment for each type of work and each location, reviewed at least every 12 months.
