Overview

New account managers often learn expansion by copying whoever closed last, and the habits do not travel. This playbook writes the method down: the signals that justify a call, the four plays, the messages for each buyer, the stages and their exit tests, and the measures that show whether it is working. Each section is written as a rule a manager can check.

The sample is for Ashdown Park Supply, an office and warehouse supplier, and shows the signals that led 212 customers to expand, two buyer personas, the stages of a play and a scorecard with net retention at 112%. Every name, figure and product is fictional. Replace the signals, personas and stages with the ones in your own data, and align them with your CRM before you publish.

Useful for

  • A new account manager reading the playbook in their first fortnight before taking accounts
  • A manager coaching a rep whose expansion deals keep stalling at the business case stage
  • Sales ops checking that the stage names here match the opportunity stages in the CRM

What's included

  • Signals: the triggers that justify a call, with survey results and two buyer personas
  • Plays: a four-step play from trigger to hand-over, with the stages of a deal
  • Messaging: a schedule of value messages by persona, with timing, owner and proof
  • Process: the four stages of a play, each with a days window and an exit test
  • Measures: a scorecard with net retention, plays run and the accounts in play
  • Make it yours: numbered steps for defining the ideal account and matching CRM stages

Questions

Are the company, people and figures fictional?

Yes. Ashdown Park Supply, Priya Nair, the buyers, the survey and every figure in this playbook are fictional. Replace them with your own data before you give the document to a new rep.

How often should the playbook be updated?

Review it each quarter, and whenever a stage name or exit test changes in the CRM. Put the version number and review date at the top, so reps know which version they are reading.

What is the most common mistake in a playbook?

Describing the process you wish the team followed rather than what the top reps actually do. Write the steps from deals that really happened, then check the stage data against them every quarter.
