A board resignation has to be clear about three things: that you are resigning, the day it takes effect and what you leave behind. This template sets them out as short numbered clauses a chair can file, followed by a handover checklist with owners and dates, and a sign-off line for the person who receives your work.
The sample is a letter dated 12 March 2027 from Helena Marsh, a trustee and finance chair at Havenbrook Care, giving six weeks' notice and leaving on 23 April 2027. It lists the meetings she will attend, six handover items and a thank-you that names real work. Replace the names, dates and handover items, and check the notice against your governing document.
Click Make a copy in Google Docs, then confirm on the Google page. The copy is saved to your own Google Drive.
Replace Havenbrook Care, the names and the date, and set the effective date from the notice in your governing document.
Rewrite the handover offer with your own papers, contacts and committee work, and give each item an owner and a date.
Add one sentence of thanks that names a real person or piece of work, and a contact for questions after you leave.
Delete the guide page, sign the letter and send it to the chair and the company secretary.
Check your governing document or contract first. The sample gives six weeks, but notice for directors is set by the articles and company law, so follow the rule that applies to you.
You do not have to. Keep the letter factual and polite, and raise any concern directly with the chair or in an exit conversation, not in the letter that goes on the record.
No. Havenbrook Care, Helena Marsh, Desmond Okoro and every date in the sample are fictional. Replace them with your own details before you send a letter.
