Options papers stall when the recommendation arrives late or the options are variants of one choice. This decision memo template opens with the recommendation and the decision date, then gives the background, the criteria, the options side by side, an assessment with weighted scores, and a next-steps plan with owners. Each page is built for an executive who needs the answer in the first lines and an auditor who reads the reasons months later.
The sample is for Eastlake Digital, a fictional digital team choosing a booking service to replace a platform that loses vendor support in March 2028. It scores three options and a do-nothing baseline on five tests, and the recommended option scores 74 out of 100 against 62 for the next. Replace the options, criteria, weights and costs with your own, and keep the scores and the revisit date in the decision log.
Click Make a copy in Google Docs, then confirm on the Google page. The copy is saved to your own Google Drive.
Write the recommendation and the decision date as the first two lines of the first page.
Replace the options with your real alternatives, and score them on the criteria page with your own weights.
Add the decision, the decider and the date to your decision log, and set a revisit date.
Delete the make it yours page, then share the document with reviewers or present it.
No. Eastlake Digital, Imogen Brandt, the scores and every cost are fictional sample figures. Replace them with your own options and evidence before the paper goes to a decision maker.
A paper with one option is a business case, not an options paper. Keep at least two alternatives and do nothing as the baseline, so the cost of inaction is visible to reviewers.
Copy the decision, decider, date and reasons into your decision log, and set a revisit date for any choice that could age badly. The paper keeps the reasoning for auditors.
