Overview

Small engineering teams skip design docs because the usual template feels like a committee exercise, then argue about the approach in pull requests. This technical design document template is built for changes that need agreement but not a full review: the problem with one measured number, goals and non-goals, the proposal, the options scored honestly, the rollout and rollback, and open questions with owners.

The sample is a Larkspur Software note, from a fictional company, on moving webhook delivery out of the API request path. It uses 1,200 requests per second with a 3x peak, a p95 target under 200 ms, a $6k monthly cost delta and a five-engineer-week estimate. Replace the context, alternatives, dates and owners with your own, and delete any section you do not need.

Useful for

  • A tech lead proposing a queue, cache or schema change and wanting a decision in one review round
  • A startup team recording why it picked one option, so the next engineer can read it in five minutes
  • An engineer planning a staged rollout with gates, owners and a rollback path

What's included

  • Problem article with goals, non-goals and the numbers that matter
  • Proposal page that explains the change in three short steps
  • Options comparison with a pass or fail grid, a scored table and a recommendation
  • Rollout timeline with five gates and what happens at each one
  • 16-week schedule with owners, a six-month summary and a rollback note
  • A make-it-yours guide for replacing the sample with your own design

How to use it

  1. 1

Click Make a copy in Google Docs, then confirm on the Google page. The copy is saved to your own Google Drive.

  2. 2

Replace the problem with the real user or operational pain, including one measured number, and rewrite the goals and non-goals.

  3. 3

Replace the sample alternatives with the options your team genuinely argued about, and keep the scoring honest.

  4. 4

Update the rollout gates and schedule, and give every open question an owner and a decide-by date.

  5. 5

Delete the Make it yours page, then share the doc with your reviewers.

Questions

When should I use a lightweight design doc?

Use it when a change needs agreement from other engineers but not a full architecture review: a new queue, a schema change, a dependency swap. Aim for two to six pages.

Are Larkspur Software and the people in it real?

No. The company, the people, the email addresses and every figure are fictional sample content. Replace them with your own numbers and owners.

Do I have to keep every section?

No. Delete the data model section if there is no schema change, but keep the alternatives and a rollback path. Reviewers trust a design more when it shows what it rejected.
