Overview

Career ladders leave people guessing what the next level asks of them. This template sets out each job level with its scope and decisions, the expectations that go with it, the behaviors measured every quarter and the steps a promotion case follows. The six pages run from a cover and a level summary through to a guide page that you delete before you share the document.

Every page is filled with sample content for Ivywell Group, a fictional engineering contractor with 412 field engineers, so you can see what a finished standard looks like. The names, figures, chart values and promotion dates are invented sample data. Replace them with your own levels, criteria and timetable, and keep the layouts and styles as they are.

Useful for

  • A manager drafting Level 2 to Level 4 expectations for a field team
  • An HR partner setting the promotion timetable for the next review window
  • An engineer preparing a Level 3 case with a mentor before the panel

Questions

Is this career ladder template free to use?

Yes. Make a copy in Google Docs and it is yours to edit. There is no sign-up on this page and no cost to make the copy.

Can I change the levels and the number of pages?

Yes. The levels are plain text and tables, so you can add or remove a level row, and the layouts keep their styles. Delete any page you do not need before you share it.

Are the company, people and figures real?

No. Ivywell Group, its engineers and managers, and every figure, date and chart value are fictional sample data. Replace them with your own before anyone outside your team reads the document.
