A first technical hire is often asked for a strategy before the team has a shared view of where it stands. This document gives that view in order: the company's stage, the stack in layers, a build or buy decision, the hiring plan and steering group, and the cash and debt limits that make the plan affordable.
The sample follows Willowmere Software, a fictional company with 52 engineers planning to reach 60. It recommends a hybrid approach scored at 17 out of 20, shows a three-year cash statement and keeps debt under 10% of receipts. Replace the goals, stack, scores, names and figures with your own.
Click Make a copy in Google Docs, then confirm on the Google page. The copy is saved to your own Google Drive.
Replace Willowmere Software and the stage description with your own company, goals and diagnosis.
Update the stack diagram, the build or buy scores and the callout to match the choices you will really make.
Enter your headcount plan, steering group and cash figures, and make sure every subtotal still adds up.
Delete the guide page, then share the strategy with the board and your leadership team.
Two to four. Each needs a metric, an owner and a stop condition. Anything beyond that belongs on a not-doing list so the team can see what was deliberately left out.
No. Willowmere Software, the named people, the email addresses and every figure are fictional sample content. Replace them with your own before sharing.
No. If your board does not need it, delete the page. It is included because funding a technical plan is easier when the effect on cash and debt is visible.
