Cost-Benefit Analysis

Make-or-buy decisions are often argued from unit price alone, which hides the upfront cost, the labour and the risk. This template sets out a cost-benefit analysis on a shared five-year timeline: scope, in-house cost, supplier cost, quality actions, risks, the decision and a recommendation with sensitivity. It shows the do-nothing option, so every choice is judged against the same baseline.
The sample is for Netherby Capital, a fictional manufacturer deciding whether to machine 42,000 brackets a year in-house. Its costs, NPV and payback are sample data, using an 8 percent discount rate over five years. Replace the options, figures and owners with your own, and rerun the sensitivity test before you present the recommendation.

State the decision, the options and the five-year horizon in the first box.
Enter costs by year for each option, including the do-nothing baseline.
Discount costs and benefits at your finance policy rate, then run the sensitivity.
Delete the guide page and any section you do not need, then share the analysis.
Yes. Copy the analysis into your Drive for free, and every option, cost and assumption stays open for review.
No. Netherby Capital, its plant, suppliers and every figure are fictional sample data. Replace them with your own cost and benefit evidence before the decision is made.
Doing nothing has a cost too, such as rising repairs or lost orders. Costing it honestly shows whether a change is worth making at all, not just which option looks cheapest.
